Rough Couple weeks for Colton

Colton had a rough past few weeks.  He started with a horrible cough keeping him up at night, so we gave him children's delsym.  This medicine made him not sleep and go crazy.  He acted like he was on speed and barley slept for 3 days! During this time while he was supposed to be napping, he destroyed his bedroom, which included turning on his lamp, laying it on it side, then later touching the very very hot light bulb.  He burned the palm of his hand pretty bad so we went to the pediatrician to get it checked out. They gave him a special burn cream to help it heal.  Then on the night of New Year's Day, Colton woke up in the middle of the night in really bad pain saying his ear hurt. He was so uncomfortable, we gave him some tylenol and put him in bed with us. We went to see the pediatrician the next morning to check his ears since we were planning on flying the next day.  Diagnosis: A ruptured , yes ruptured, ear drum!??! What?  Colton has never had an ear infection before and he ruptures his ear drum on his first...this is how this boy rolls!! I guess Colton is starting a new holiday tradition of rupturing something...last year appendix, this year ear drum...what will next year be!?!  The doctor gave us ear drops and antibiotics and said since his ear already ruptured, we were clear to fly.  We went on our trip and the night before we were to fly home, Colton started running a high fever that got up to 103.3.  We called the on call nurse to see how high his fever should get to take him in and what she thought about flying the next day.  She said a temp of 104 to take him in and if he was not in pain then go ahead and fly to get home.  We got his fever down and were up all night monitoring him.  Thank goodness it never got any higher!  We made it home with a not so fun flight and Colton kept a fever the whole day.  The next morning we went back to the pediatrician.  He said his ear was healing and thinks Colton just got a virus on top of everything else.  They tested him for the flu, which came back negative thank goodness, and said just monitor him. He has slowly gotten better since we have been home and he has gotten much needed sleep. We are on the mend and ready to start having fun soon!
Here is a picture of his poor little hand he burned.

  1. oh my goodness! Poor baby!! That is rough! Addyson had several ruptured ear drums. It is no fun. Luckily, she hasn't had that happen in several years but it happened to her probably 3 or 4 times. I can't believe that was his first ear infection though. That is crazy!
