In the sad holiday tradition our little family seems to be establishing...we have had yet another holiday break with a significant illness. Cambry got RSV. So, 2011-Colton appendicitis, 2012-Colton ruptures his ear drum, 2013-Cambry gets RSV. This is one holiday tradition we are not enjoying. The only somewhat good thing is that Jeff is off work when these things happen...thank goodness! So, back to Cambry's story. On Friday the 20th Cambry was really fussy and not nursing good. Overnight she started a mild cough, and by Sunday she was congested and coughing frequently. We were really uncomfortable with her cough and not wanting to go through the night risking her getting worse, we decided to have her checked out. I took her to Acute Kids and they did an RSV test and it came back positive. Great...she is only 2 months old...not good. So they gave me instructions on how to manage the congestion and the signs to watch for her getting worse. Well by the next morning she was worse and we really wanted to talk to our doctor and nurses. I called the pediatrician and while on the phone with the nurse she could hear Cambry cough and breathing and did not like the way she sounded. The nurse said we needed to come in to have her checked. We took her in that afternoon and they said she had developed an ear infection as well and did not like the way she sounded in her chest. They administered a breathing treatment with a nebulizer and albuterol to see how she responded. It helped open up her airways, so they prescribed us a nebulizer and albuterol to perform at home along with antibiotics for her ear infection. Poor baby has really felt crummy and it breaks my heart! She gets so frustrated with the congestion and her cough sounds awful. :( We rescheduled celebrating Christmas with our families till next week to make sure she is better and no longer contagious. Apparently RSV is super contagious and has a long incubation period. For children over 2 and adults it is just a mild cold, but is pretty serious for a little infant. We are lucky she is finally getting better and we did not have to go to the hospital like so many young infants do with RSV. We continue to pray she keeps getting better and this can all be behind us!
